The agricultural, cattle-breeding and forestall activities still predominate in this municipality. Among the main productions the most important are: cork, olive oil, wine and honey. The high quality cattle production has been increasing over the last years.
Under the industrial point of view, we can find food industries (mainly bakeries), cork and wood products and the manufacture of metallic and non-metallic mineral products industries. Related to handicraft activities, to underline the basket-making and works in leather and hide.
The Industrial Park of Adua, a municipal initiative, constitutes a fundamental instrument to the development of the municipality.
It has infra-structures and an accessibility profile (EN114, EN4, EN253 AND EN2) which ensures the proximity to large provision and stock markets for final goods as Lisbon, Setúbal and Sines. The municipality has a highway (A6/ IP7) connecting Lisbon to Madrid and passing north Montemor-o-Novo, with two road connections, one of them near the Industrial Park of Adua.
According to the estimate carried out from the available data, the tertiary sector registered a meaningful growth representing presently about 38% of the global employment in the municipality.
However services are strongly polarized in the “administrative and personal and collective services” branches and “commerce and restaurants”, which together represent about 87% of the tertiary employment of the municipality.
The municipality still has an Exhibition Park as a development strategic vector, once it plays an extremely important role to the economical agents of this region.
The Exhibition Park of Montemor-o-Novo allows the promotion and divulging of the commercial and tourism potentialities as well as of those related to handicraft activities. The creation of thematic fairs in a definite and specific space also allows making a program according to the needs and interests of the enterprise tissue set in the region.
